The world No. 3 women’s doubles team of Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank) have been dealt an injury blow ahead of the start of the Hangzhou Asian Games.
The pair withdrew from the round of 32 of the World Badminton Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 1000 China Open in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China, on June 6.
Kim pulled her right calf muscle in a local training session ahead of the tournament.
Kim returned home immediately and will spend the next week resting and receiving injections. After that, she plans to combine training and treatment.
An official from the Korea Badminton Association said on July 7, “We don’t think it’s a serious injury. However, they have been sent home as their injuries may worsen,” said an official from the KBA, adding, “There is no discussion about changing the Asian Games roster.”
Kim So-young and Gong Hee-yong lead the Korean women’s doubles team alongside the world No. 2 pair of Lee So-hee (Incheon International Airport) and Baek Hana (MG Saemaul Bank).
The Tokyo 2020 bronze medalists have won four gold medals at international tournaments this year, including the most prestigious event of the year, the Jeon Young Open.
