‘Korean breaststroke powerhouse’ Choi Dong-yeol

Choi Dong-yeol (24, Gangwon Provincial Office) was disqualified and failed to advance to the semifinals of the men’s 50m breaststroke world championships.

Choi Dong-yeol participated in the men’s 50m breaststroke preliminary group 5 race at the 2024 International Aquatics Federation World Championships held at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar on the 13th and finished the race with a time of 27.01 seconds and 4th place in the group.

However, after video review, the decision was ‘disqualified’.

If the record of 27.01 seconds had been recognized, he would have ranked 9th out of 60 people and received a ticket to the semifinals given to the top 16, but DSQ, meaning disqualification, was added next to Choi Dong-yeol’s name.

Choi Dong-yeol won four medals (1 silver and 3 bronze), including relay, at the Hangzhou Asian Games last fall.At the time, he set Korean records and won bronze medals in the individual events 100m breaststroke (59.28 seconds) and 50m (26.93 seconds).

At this year’s Doha World Championships, he participated in the 100m and 50m breaststroke individual events. In the 100m, he advanced to the semifinals and ranked 11th (59.74 seconds), and was disqualified in the preliminaries for the 50m.

Choi Dong-yeol, who completed the individual event schedule for the 2024 World Championships, prepares to participate in the team relay event.

Heo Yeon-kyung (18, Daejeon Metropolitan City Facilities Management Corporation) placed 26th out of 50 athletes in the women’s 200m freestyle preliminaries with a time of 2 minutes 00.78 seconds and did not advance to the semifinals.
