First issue raised at the football association level regarding racial discrimination against overseas players
Hwang Hee-chan
The Korea Football Association has raised the issue with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) regarding national team striker Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton) being racially abused during a practice match with his team.
The Korea Football Association announced on the 18th that it had sent an official letter to FIFA expressing concerns about racial discrimination and requesting strong sanctions against the perpetrators.
The Korea Football Association said on social media, “We express grave concerns about the racist behavior that player Hwang Hee-chan suffered from an opposing team player during a recent practice match, and requested that FIFA strengthen sanctions against perpetrators in order to prevent and eradicate racial discrimination on football fields.”
This is the first time that the Korea Football Association has officially raised an issue with FIFA about a case of racial discrimination against a Korean player playing overseas.
On the 16th, Hwang Hee-chan was subjected to racist remarks during a pre-season friendly match between Wolverhampton and Italian club Como 1907.
This led to an incident where teammate Daniel Podence was sent off after he threw a punch at a player who had made a racist remark.
Como, on the other hand, angered fans by showing an antagonistic attitude, saying that Wolverhampton players were overreacting.
Como’s ‘explanation’ was that he simply called the player in question ‘Jackie Chan’, referring to the last letter of Hwang Hee-chan’s name.
Wolverhampton took a hard line and decided to lodge a complaint with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) regarding the incident. 안전놀이터
